Do’s and Don’ts of Amazon Product Photos

Your Amazon Product Photos Are the Pitch

Think of your Amazon product photos like your salesperson — only they never speak. They either convince the shopper to stay or give them a reason to keep scrolling.

With thousands of products competing for attention, it’s not enough to “just show the item.” Your photos need to be:

  • Clear

  • Consistent

  • Visually persuasive

That’s why more and more successful brands invest in professional product photography — because they understand how much those images do the heavy lifting.

Do: Invest in Professional Photography

Yes, it’s tempting to DIY your product photos. And yes, smartphones have amazing cameras. But lighting, composition, and retouching are what separate a decent image from one that actually converts.

Professional photographers:

  • Know how to control lighting and shadows

  • Use equipment that captures details customers want to see

  • Provide clean, consistent editing across all photos

  • Understand how to showcase texture, color, and shape accurately

This is about selling a physical experience through a digital window — and it pays to get it right.

Want to Stand Out with Better Product Photos?

Don’t let average images hold your listing back.

Don’t: Use Inconsistent Lighting or Angles

When every photo looks like it was taken at a different time, with a different setup, it creates visual confusion. Worse, it gives your listing a disorganized or unprofessional feel.

Avoid:

  • Harsh shadows in one image and soft lighting in the next

  • A mix of overhead and side angles that don’t complement each other

  • Inconsistent color temperature (cool in one photo, warm in another)

Your product photo set should feel like a cohesive visual series, not a collection of mismatched snapshots.

Do: Highlight Texture, Material, and Detail

Amazon shoppers can’t touch your product — they rely entirely on what they see. Your photos should make them feel the product through the screen.

Use close-up shots that capture:

  • Surface texture (smooth, rough, soft, etc.)

  • Material details (leather grain, metal finish, stitching)

  • Functionality (zippers, snaps, lids, compartments)

These details matter. They help shoppers build confidence and reduce uncertainty — which increases purchase intent.

Don’t: Overedit or Misrepresent the Product

Polished is good. Unrealistic is not.

Overexposed whites, color enhancements, or overly airbrushed edits can mislead the customer — and that leads to returns or negative reviews.

The goal is to show your product at its absolute best, not to create something that doesn’t match what arrives in the box.

Do: Showcase Multiple Angles

One of the biggest mistakes sellers make is relying on just a few generic views. Shoppers want a 360-degree understanding of what they’re buying.

At minimum, include:

  • Front

  • Side

  • Back

  • Top or bottom

  • Close-up of key feature

Every angle should answer a question or build clarity. The more visually informed your customer is, the more likely they are to buy.

Don’t: Skip the Packaging

Your packaging is part of the product experience. Including at least one photo that shows the box, bag, or container helps customers:

  • Know exactly what will arrive

  • Appreciate branding and presentation

  • Feel confident about giftability (if applicable)

It’s a simple shot that adds a lot of trust.

Do: Shoot in Natural or Diffused Light (if DIY)

If you’re handling photos in-house, lighting is everything.

Use:

  • Natural daylight near a window (avoid direct sun)

  • Light diffusers or softboxes to eliminate harsh shadows

  • White or neutral backdrops to avoid color cast

You don’t need a studio setup to get great shots — but you do need light that’s soft, even, and controlled.

Don’t: Shoot Too Close Without Proper Focus

Blurry close-ups are worse than no close-up at all. Use a tripod or stabilizer, and make sure your camera can focus properly at close range.

If detail is important (like stitching, texture, or small parts), make sure it’s crisp and intentional, not fuzzy or distorted.

Good Photos Sell More. Great Photos Build Brands.

Product photography is often the most overlooked piece of an Amazon listing — but it’s also one of the most powerful.

Great photos:

  • Boost your conversion rate

  • Decrease return rates

  • Help you stand out in search

  • Make your brand look more trustworthy and premium

This is the moment when a shopper decides whether they can trust you with their money. So don’t cut corners — make every shot count.
